Frequently asked questions about the firearms licence course and shooting training
01
Can I shoot without a firearms licence?
Yes. At our officially approved range in Vienna you shoot under the supervision of our instructors, with no firearms document of your own. You need valid photo ID and you have to be of age. If this is your first time on a firearm, the right starting points are our Experience Shooting session or the course "Sicherer Start, Einführung Pistole".
02
Do I need my own firearm?
No. Our Experience Shooting price includes the firearms of the chosen package, ammunition, ear protection and instructor supervision. The course "Sicherer Start" includes a loan firearm and 50 rounds. If you later want to buy a firearm of your own, we advise you on the choice and refer you to our dealer partners.
03
What is the Waffenführerschein and what do I need it for?
The Waffenführerschein is the training course required by law before you apply for a firearms ownership card (Waffenbesitzkarte) or a firearms pass (Waffenpass). The course itself is the same for both documents. The authority, not us, then decides on the document. You do not need it to shoot with us at the range.
04
How does the Waffenführerschein work with you?
You register online for the course "Waffenführerschein neu". After the course you submit the certificate to the authority and name the psychologist we work with, who produces the mandatory firearms-psychological report. Once your file has been processed, you register online again for the psychological assessment interview here at our premises. This is the sequence under the rules in force since 1 November 2025 and applies to male applicants holding Austrian citizenship. Female applicants and male applicants without Austrian citizenship can register for the course and the psychological report at the same time.
05
What does the Waffenführerschein cost?
The course for a first application costs 85 euro, the refresher 49 euro. The firearms-psychological report costs 813.60 euro, an amount set by law.
06
How long is the course and what does it cover?
The course takes around 60 minutes. It covers the essential legal provisions on firearms, how firearms work technically, and the key rules for handling firearms safely.
07
Do I have to refresh the Waffenführerschein?
Yes. The law requires the same course as a refresher every five years, currently without a psychological report. Register with us under "Waffenführerschein Auffrischung" once the police ask you to.
08
Does the course replace proper shooting training?
No, and we say so deliberately. It is the legal minimum: the law prescribes only theory plus firing five shots. For a serious first training on the pistol we offer the 75-minute course "Sicherer Start, Einführung Pistole", ideal for the period while your application is still being processed by the police.
09
Which course should I start with?
If you have never fired a shot and simply want to try it, take the Experience Shooting session. If you have just completed the Waffenführerschein, "Sicherer Start, Einführung Pistole" is the next step. If you want to learn to shoot in a structured way over several sessions, "Pistole Basic" is our continuous group course, and you can join at any time. If you are unsure, call us and we will give you an honest recommendation.
10
Where does the training take place and how do I get there?
At our range at Rothergasse 2, 1220 Vienna. The shortest walk is from the Süßenbrunner Straße bus stop, served by lines 95A and 22A, around 8 to 9 minutes on foot. From Pogarstraße station (S 25) it is roughly 13 minutes.
